The CSM Preparation for Higher Education in the Context of Change
Brief description of session and activities
The session comprises of a discussion between C Harley and three students, one from each year of the Fine Art strand of the CSM Preparation for Higher Education course (Prep for HE). In effect; a graduate, one current stage two and one current stage one student.
After a description of the Fine Art strand of the CSM Preparation for Higher Education course, the panel with discuss through examples of their artwork their experience of the following areas prior to the Preparation for HE course, during it, and once on the degree courses. These points have been drawn from the FACE report and attempt to represent the key factors that shape the student and staff experience of the more globalised and international classroom.
- Differences in class and cultural perspectives
- Unfamiliarity with critical and analytical language
- Unfamiliarity with English
- Varied levels of independent study skills
- Changes in funding and fees
How will students be involved in the session?
As panelists showing and discussing their work
What will participants take away from the session?
Participants will take away an insight into student reflections on change in HE. There will be a special character to this discussion as the responses will be ‘thought’ in relation to the students’ artwork which will be shown in a Powerpoint presentation. We anticipate that an understanding of how change is experienced will be useful to those planning and allocating support and delivering content to the wider community of students in the specific context of creative practices . Such insight may also have implications for thinking about access and opportunity in the future.
