"I call myself a materiologist… if that’s a word." Exploring how design students approach their practice
Brief description of session and activities
Recognising the increasing cross-disciplinary exchanges occurring within the creative industries, and arts and design higher education, this session reports on findings from the ‘Design Explorations’ research project undertaken at Central Saint Martins (CSM) in 2010-11.
The session aims to stimulate conversation around the research findings, and in doing so it responds to the conference’s desire to consider and debate the question ‘what cultural capital do students gain on their courses, and what discipline or industry factors are at play, while with us and after they leave?’
How will students be involved in the session?
na
What will participants take away from the session?
Participants will leave with insights into how aspects of ‘design-specific capital’ vary and are evolving across subjects, the motivations and processes of design students, and the multiple effects of cross-disciplinary exchange.
