A Critique of the White Perspective in Creative Higher Education through Student Voices at UAL

Brief description of session and activities

This workshop aims to consider the views of students who have experienced a creative education that has, in the main, been seen from a white perspective.

We will use the theoretical framework of critical pedagogy (Friere 1970) which is grounded in the concept of social justice to discuss their views in order to generate systemic change where culture and cultural capital can positively be present within everything we do.

There will be an opportunity for the participants to engage with a range of mediums, video clips, artifacts and quotes produced by students and in small groups reflect and discuss further.

How will students be involved in the session?

Students and alumnus will be involved in the development of this workshop, but not the delivery. Student works from ‘Tell Us About It’, ‘One Step at a Time’, ‘Shades of Noir’ and ‘Any Room at The Inn’ will be used at the heart of the session.

What will participants take away from the session?

Clear understanding of what critical pedagogy is, the benefits, and how it can be applied to Creative Higher education.
