Teaching and Professional Fellowship: 'Learning videos – do they work for you?'
Brief description of session and activities
We will present the findings of the Teaching and Professional Fellowship project on which we have been working over the last six months. The project explores the use of on-line instruction videos as a resource accessible to students at all times and at different locations. The workshop will include:
- A presentation of the student survey results, showing where and how students are most likely to view on-line videos, as well as preferred production styles; and highlights from our extensive literature review and on-line research on video resource creation guides.
- Student’ feedback, related to how their specific learning needs are addressed by videos (e.g. foreign students’ difficulties with understanding all that is said in class, dyslexic students finding text based instructions difficult), will be discussed and compared with teaching practices shared by the workshop participants.
- The participants will be asked to plan a video of their choice, using our guidelines, and to comment on the practicalities of the process
- Finally, the audience will debate their views of and experience with creating and using on-line videos and lectures/ talks recordings.
How will students be involved in the session?
Student voices will be played, to highlight the qualitative aspects of the data.
What will participants take away from the session?
A broadened understanding of the underpinning principles of multimedia resource creation; specific student feedback; examples of styles of videos appropriate for different purposes; video creation guidelines.
