A RAS Dissemination Event: LCF Projects, accessible learning: some findings

Brief description of session and activities

RAS (Retain, Achieve, Succeed) is a staff research programme comprising 15 projects across the university. The programme examines issues around a 30% achievement gap between home black and home white students. Its focus has been on the curriculum and understanding matters of diversity and accessibility within institutional delivery at UAL.

LCF RAS projects are now nearing completion and we would therefore like to offer a workshop disseminating some results of the work staff carried out. This session profiles LCF RAS researchers who have completed RAS projects although a number of projects continue over 2013/14. The session will provide opportunities for discussion around equalities research conducted in similar fields. Findings from two reports will be disseminated:

  • Heather Pickard: Exploring the visible and invisible
  • Gabriela Daniels: Student engagement: scientific subjects and group assignments.

There will be informal Q & A activity designed to allow UAL staff to ask about: issues arising; qualitative research methods for educational research; doing research into sensitive areas.

The workshop may offer suggestions as to how new researchers may negotiate such matters within similar, or future, RAS projects.

How will students be involved in the session?

Through a discussion of their experiences around matters related to their access to the curriculum.

What will participants take away from the session?

A clearer picture of BAME student needs around accessing the curriculum. Knowledge on doing research into sensitive fields of practice.
