Teaching Award: Work based Learning for vocational education
Brief description of session and activities
In the summer of 2012 Derek Yates was asked to speak at ‘Critical Tensions’ – the Annual St Bride’s Library conference curated by John Walter, editor of Eye Magazine. His talk explored how new developments in ‘Work Based Learning’ are redefining definitions for vocational education. To illustrate his point he organised a collaborative project with the design company – Ico; the print on demand publisher – UbyU and second year students from the FdA. Working together in pairs, illustrators and graphic designers created a book, which used a hashtag and a tweet as it’s starting point.
They were art directed in weekly meetings by Russell Holmes and Viv Bhatia two of the creative partners at Ico in order to re-create a professional working methodology. The books were then published by UbyU and exhibited at the St Brides Conference. Throughout the project students analyzed their learning through a daily journal that formed their assessment evidence.
