Brief description of session and activities

Heather Sproat will talk about the making of an instructional film on haute couture tailoring, and its incorporation into the curriculum with the aim of improving students’ creative outputs. Decisions made in the production and use of the film, and the lessons learned from its use with students, will be explained. This will be of interest to anyone who creates and/or uses multimedia teaching resources for and with their students (or is thinking about doing so). There will be opportunities to ask Heather questions about the experience.  A short video about the project can be viewed here: http://process.arts.ac.uk/sites/default/files/origvid/actionresearchprojecthsproat720p0.mov

Judy Willcocks – a museums educator, will present the outcomes of an intervention to transform the nature of object-based learning sessions. This involved reducing the number of museum objects examined in a session, and creating structured activities that enabled students to make new connections around objects. The project utilised an innovative method of data collection through coded observation sheets that will be of interest to those who observe teaching or carry out pedagogic research. There will be opportunities to ask Judy questions. A short video about the project can be viewed here: http://process.arts.ac.uk/content/how-can-reducing-physical-content-object-based-learning-sessions-create-space-student-focu-0

Susanne James will share her experience of creating a group tutorial framework, utilising action learning set theory with the aim of creating a system where students feel supported and more confident. The project explored how a group tutorial system can encourage collaboration with peers, develop students’ capacity to self-assess on creative projects, and increase social and academic engagement. There will be opportunities to ask Susanne questions. A short video about the project can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAY7L3irfJA

Will students be involved in the session? If so how?

Yes – they will be presenting their project outputs and taking questions.

What will participants take away from the session?

A sense of how UAL staff/PG Cert participants are applying their creativity to their own teaching practices, and involving their own students in the exploration and enhancement of the learning experience.
