Learning from Nature: biomimicry in a learning environment

  • Heather Barnett: Lecturer MA Art and Science (also HEA National Teaching Fellow), PG Fine Art, CSM.

Learning from Nature explores ideas of biomimicry in a learning environment – borrowing from the 3.8 billion year research and development phase offered by nature. This session – half talk, half thought experiment - explores notions of adaptability and resilience through the lens of biological systems, such as slime moulds and ant colonies. Here, principles of biomimicry provide an analogous platform for examining systems of knowledge exchange and methods for establishing environmental conditions conducive to creative learning. By following some simple biological rules we may observe how complex behaviours can emerge.
