  • Sarah Campbell: Curator, CSM Museum & Study Collection, CSM

Abstract

This session will take place in the Study Room, CSM Museum & Study Collection, Kings Cross (meet in reception at Kings Cross - Maximum 15 people).

Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection contains thousands of objects and has been collecting work by students and staff for more than a century. The museum includes a historic teaching collection of work purchased by the first Principal of the Central School of Arts and Crafts, William Lethaby as well as contemporary work purchased from degree shows over the last 20 years.

This workshop uses the tools of Object Based Learning to investigate and encourage discussion about Museum objects. It is a method taught to many of our students on wide range of courses including Fashion, Fine Art and Product Design to introduce them to the museum and to help them see older objects and the Museum as potentially relevant to their practice.

You will get to handle items from the collection and interrogate them using Jules Prown’s method of Object Based Learning. By the end of the session you will be put the position of curator, telling the rest of your group, and the Museum curator, about the object you’ve worked with, sharing your thoughts about it.
