Online Resource: Inclusivity in Teaching. How can this be more effective?

Abstract

University staff want to be inclusive practitioners, but sometimes lack an understanding of what that means in practice, with fractional staff often unaware of the resources that are available both through UAL and externally.

Emerging from work done on the PGCert module 'Inclusivity in Teaching in HE', librarian Richenda Gwilt is working with Academic Support tutor Chris Koning on developing content for a resource forming a ‘snapshot of information; taking an inclusive approach, we are working UAL staff to inform the content, and with UAL-wide Academic Support to share the content via Academic Support Online.   The content will include viewpoints, video/audio resources, e.g. the work of Gurnham Singh, links to reports, journal articles, glossaries and definitions, teaching and learning resources within UAL and externally. It will refer to UAL library collections – e.g. LCC Zine collection, Archives - all of which are relevant to teaching across disciplines and which UAL staff can (and do) use with students. It will give pointers to resources that could be accessed by staff and students, and with reference to academic resources outside the Western canon.

Richenda and Chris will talk through a beta-version of this resource, aiming to generate a discussion about what Inclusivity means to us as staff in a teaching role. As cross-discipline workers ourselves, we hope to spark discussions of how colleagues across disciplines could work together, and to use this cross-disciplinary material in their teaching.
