What does it take to be successfully independent? An embedded approach for supporting students with soft skills

UAL is a pioneer in Higher Education, by providing course specific Language Development (LD) classes and fostering an embedded approach, where the LD tutor and course team communicate closely to ensure the syllabus meets students' needs.
This lightning talk introduces the aims and data from an ongoing research project on independent learning among MA Design students at LCC. The emerging data points towards the prioritisation of soft skills over hard skills and the need for more tools for students to become fully independent in their discipline. Some tentative teaching suggestions are made that involve embedding LD within the course curriculum.
