Creative Careers Under Pressure: Understanding the graduate-to-work transition in the Creative Industries

workshop

Abstract

The session will explore the growing challenges graduates are facing securing their first role, particularly within the creative industries, and what employers are actually looking for in 2026. Using ERIC’s real-time data and insights from hundreds of thousands of young people exploring careers, we will share trends around employer expectations, application behaviour, skills gaps, and why some young people are struggling to progress.

Session and activities

The session would include a mix of ERIC insights, employer perspectives (potentially through short videos or guest contributions), and interactive discussion with UAL attendees. The workshop will also include an audience reflection piece around how students and staff are currently feeling about graduate employability and industry expectations. The goal is for attendees to leave with practical takeaways and ideas around how UAL can continue preparing students for the realities of work and recruitment in 2026 and beyond.

ERIC was founded by Mae and Sam to address barriers young people face entering creative and digital careers. The organisation now operates primarily through its app and education/community partnerships.  ERIC works with schools, universities, employers, and creative organisations to build talent pipelines into the creative industries. They are also sector leaders in using data from its platform and community to understand trends in graduate behaviours, skills gaps, and employer expectations.
