Formative Visual Memory – researching how we learn to read and decode what we see.

How we can learn from our formative visual memories, whilst also reclaiming the act of recollection from the Nostalgia-Industrial Complex.
I am undertaking a PhD based at London College of Communication that focuses upon formative visual memory and its role in our childhood awarenesses of living in an encoded world. My practice based research seeks to ascertain how these childhood observations framed our desire to learn more through the self, and/or outside of formal education. My practice tests and explores the symbiotic relationship between (autoethnographic) writing and visual translation, a cyclical act of memory recall and metacognition.
I propose to undertake a lightning talk presenting the overarching concept with examples of my research works in progress, to engender further discussions pertaining to formative visual memory, and its future potential as a teaching and learning postionality framing method or tool, specifically for HE Art and Design.
