UALTech MashUp

lightning talk

Abstract

A lightening talk/pecha kucha format combining images from the vast variety of technical/technological learning experiences and opportunities from across UAL that underpin the academic geography at UAL. The images and clips will be shown alongside spoken word, sound and gesture to encourage the audience to think about how these juxtapositions or combinations of making, teaching and performance practice can lead towards developing a deeper understanding of how technical staff formally & informally contribute to a students learning journey.

It is also an opportunity for the audience to reflect upon whether some technical resource spaces can, do or should operate as educational third spaces for students to explore, play and fail within the formal academic framework…so opportunities to develop tacit knowledge and cognitive skills alongside the learning needed to meet formal outcomes. And if so, are we designing and utilise these resources with this in mind ?

Session and activities

A slide/moving image/film clips format projected onto screen/s or wall/s in the room with the audience seated. If possible a number of viewpoints would enable the audience to sit in smaller groups banquet style or less formally than lecture theatre/auditorium/classroom style.

The presenters (up to 6)  – those who will speak/make sound/gestures  – will be positioned within the audience and will in turn stand for their part and then be reseated. Presenters will pass around objects/materials/items/pencils/paper so that the audience members have a tactile experience alongside sound and vision. If there are tables these items will be visible and available as the audience take their places and can be left after the session to be collected. Or if no tables the presenters will collect items. If possible to retrieve objects this session would be good at the end of a series of lightening talks and/or with a short break before the next session.

The session will signpost the sensory nature of the session to ensure all participants are comfortable.

Audience will be encouraged to participate through written thoughts, ideas or drawings and/or participate by speaking live ( in the moment) concise thoughts or words that are evoked throughout the session.

Can provide and set up own tech/projection, sound etc prior to the session.

The hope for the session is that all participants will enjoy the experience, understand more about technical resources and start to think about potentials for developing/engaging with these valuable resources more.
