Enhancing Classroom Inclusivity: Utilising Captions in Live Face-to-Face Teaching

lightning talk

Abstract

Join me in exploring how the integration of automatic captioning can act as a tool for fostering inclusivity in the classroom. Drawing on the results of an Action Research Project undertaken at the University of the Arts London, I will examine key benefits, practical considerations, and student feedback. Discover how this simple intervention aligns with Universal Design for Learning principles, enhancing teaching for our diverse student community.

Session and activities

In this presentation, I will delve into the realm of inclusive education through the lens of live captioning in face-to-face teaching environments. Through my Action Research Project, I investigated the efficacy and feasibility of incorporating automatic captions into classroom settings in the context of the University of the Arts London. Throughout the session, I will present the findings of my research, addressing the pivotal question: to what extent do live captions enhance teaching in face-to-face settings for students with diverse learning needs, and how practical are they to implement? Participants will gain insights into the substantial benefits of utilising captions as an inclusive teaching tool by improving access for students with hearing impairments, enhancing comprehension for students with English as an additional language, and alignment with Universal Design for Learning.
Moreover, we will explore the practical aspects of implementing live captioning, discussing technological requirements, potential challenges, and strategies for seamless integration into existing teaching practices. Participants will leave with actionable insights and resources to enhance inclusivity within their own educational contexts.
