Panopto Power: a one-stop tool for original form research data collection and transcription

Transduction (the change from one mode to another in transcription) causes change to the material structure of research data. Panopto, a lecture capture video platform supported by UAL for educational purposes can be used as a one-stop method for collecting and transcribing data in its purest form without distorting it. The software is ideal for analysing multiple forms of data as they can be reviewed simultaneously. This lightening talk shares an example of how Panopto provided the opportunity to interpret multiple verbal and non-verbal communication modes in an integrated way ideally suited to an experimental small scale research study.
The Panopto lecture capture video platform will be reframed as a data collection, transcription and analysis tool. A case study will be presented of a small-scale multimodal research project conducted at LCF focused on MA School of Design and Technology students group work. Panopto was the method of choice because of its ability to synchronise the twin view video and audio recordings of an observed group work interaction. Working directly from source without having to transcribe the data for analysis allowed it to remain in its most original form giving less chance of degrading the original material. The logistics of the set up and analysis will be shared giving participants insight into using this software for their own research projects.
