Reflective Practice: Translating creative practice knowledge into pedagogic knowledge

workshop

Abstract

As creative practitioners and educators, our educational philosophies/values are often rooted in creative practice. Yet, we may feel that our creative practices are deprioritised for our educational practices. Finding chances for the extra step of reflecting on how creative practice knowledge may translate into pedagogic knowledge, may be even more difficult. Creating this chance, however, may be a great source of inspiration for creative and research practices here at UAL.

Session and activities

This is an online workshop and can also be delivered in hybrid mode.

In the first 10 mins of the workshop, Ulrike and Talitha introduce some modalities and approaches to creative reflection.

Then, for the next 35 mins and working in groups of 2-3, attendees are given the chance to reflect on how introduced works have been produced, and how reflections may translate into pedagogic knowledge.

Further scaffolding may be, reflecting on the creative process of work(s) each attendee has brought to the session, and noting problematic and liberating aspects of its making and analysis. Paired or group reflective responses can be voluntarily uploaded to the Padlet provided.

The last 15 minutes may be a collective reflection session (in the main group) discussing what we may’ve learned and how it could feed back into our pedagogic practice(s)? Scaffolding themes may be

  • Working/practicing online (or hybrid) in dialogue with in-person. o Documenting the creative process (How frequently/infrequently could it be done?).
  • Communicating what was learned to others (those within the group, and perhaps the bigger group). What to bring (optional)
  • A small piece of creative practice already made, i.e., creative writing, visuals, acoustics (sound), kinaesthetic (movement), olfactory (smell/taste) and tactile (touch). Sharing this resource with the group will not be required.
  • Materials to re-create or re-interpret the above small piece, individually. o Internet access o Attendance through a laptop. Mobile phone access is also possible, especially easier if it possible to install the Padlet and Teams app.
  • This workshop is for those with a creative practice and those who would like to explore creative methods for reflection.
