Student Engagement: Challenges, Case Studies and Top Tips

workshop

Abstract

This session will examine the realities of delivering student engagement support at UAL. Drawing from the Student Learning and Engagement Pilot, participants will be presented with case studies exploring the complexities of working with students in a pastoral context. ‘Real world’ examples will show the challenges of supporting students to engage with their course and the University. The session will offer top tips that staff from all roles can take away to enhance student engagement.

Session and activities

Through case studies and group discussions, this in-person session will enable participants to reflect on their own practices and share experiences and challenges in supporting students in their attendance and engagement. This will include:

Understanding the reasons why students may not be engaging on their course (the student perspective)

Sharing of practices and identifying good practice which can be embedded within their course and/or practices

Insight into the differences and similarities in engagement provision across Colleges.

Participants will leave the session with an improved understanding of the challenges for students that impact on their attendance and engagement including some ‘top tips’ for working with and supporting students through pedagogic practices and use of UAL support services.
