Towards a Critical information literacy curriculum

workshop

Abstract

Critical Librarianship, is a new designation for a long-practiced critical approach. Also referred to as radical or progressive Librarianship, it calls on us to acknowledge systems of power and privilege that underpin the profession in an effort to challenge & change them. Built on the ideas from theorists like Paulo Friere, Henry Giroux, and Bell Hooks, librarians are applying the practice, praxis, and theory of a critical information literacy approach as part of LS policy.

Session and activities

1. Reflect on definitions & terminology related to Critical Information Literacy. 2. Develop an understanding of the how libraries can support teaching Critical Information literacy 3. Explore ways to integrate critical literacy into teaching using activities that support social purpose agenda 4. Use session planning tools (LS Climate action toolkit) to co-create teaching with librarians to support course learning outcomes and develop skills for student success.
